Understanding what your horse's skin may be telling you
Skin irritation underneath a piece of equine equipment can be concerning. When redness, tenderness, hair loss or broken skin appears beneath a band, boot, girth, saddle or other item of tack, it can be tempting to assume that the equipment has simply rubbed the horse.
Skin sensitivity is a broad term owners commonly use to describe redness, itching, soreness or increased reactivity. Veterinarians may describe particular presentations as dermatitis, contact dermatitis, pruritus, urticaria or hypersensitivity depending on the underlying cause.
However, the appearance of sore skin does not always tell the whole story.

Skin problems are far from unusual in the equine population.
Horses can experience a range of dermatological problems, including irritant and allergic reactions, insect-bite hypersensitivity, environmental allergies and other inflammatory skin conditions. Some of these problems are seasonal and may appear, disappear and recur as environmental conditions change.
Mechanical pressure and friction can also damage otherwise healthy skin. Equally importantly, skin that is already inflamed or hypersensitive may have a much lower tolerance to pressure, moisture and friction than healthy skin.
Understanding these differences is particularly important when using equipment that remains in contact with the horse for extended periods, including EQU StreamZ Bands.
This guide explains some of the signs horse owners should look for, why skin sensitivity can change throughout the year, and how to distinguish between possible dermatological irritation and more localised mechanical damage.
This article is intended as general educational information and should not be used to diagnose a skin condition. Persistent, recurrent, extensive, painful or unexplained skin changes should be assessed by a veterinary professional.
How common are skin sensitivity and allergic skin conditions in horses?
An Australian population survey covering 3,901 horses found 6.1% had a reported skin disorder, making skin disease the second most prevalent health disorder after non-laminitic lameness.
A horse that has comfortably tolerated a particular rug, boot, band or other material for months can potentially develop irritation when circumstances change. Conversely, a horse experiencing sensitivity during one period of the year may tolerate the same equipment perfectly well at another time.
The question therefore should not simply be:
"Has my horse worn this before without a problem?"
It should also be:
"What is the condition of my horse's skin now?"
The World Association for Veterinary Dermatology's clinical consensus guidelines explicitly describe allergic skin diseases in horses as common worldwide, with insect bites and environmental allergens the most common causes. Pubmed.
These figures do not mean that every episode of redness or irritation beneath equine equipment is caused by allergy. They do, however, demonstrate an important point: underlying dermatological conditions are sufficiently common that skin irritation beneath a piece of equipment should not automatically be assumed to have been caused by rubbing or poor fit.
Skin sensitivity or a mechanical rub: what is the difference?

A localised rub, abrasion or pressure injury
- a clearly defined or relatively localised lesion;
- broken or rubbed hair at a particular point;
- an abrasion corresponding to an edge, fastening or seam;
- a lesion repeatedly developing in the same position;
- evidence that equipment has been moving, rotating or slipping;
- a pressure point corresponding closely with the shape or position of the equipment;
- broken skin, blistering or ulceration concentrated at a particular contact point.
Importantly, pressure damage does not have to begin as an obvious cut. Early pressure injury may initially appear as redness, heat, swelling, tenderness, hair disturbance or a change in the skin before a visible wound develops.
A broader skin sensitivity or inflammatory reaction
A dermatological reaction can present differently.
Rather than seeing one obvious point where something has rubbed the horse, an owner may notice that a larger area of skin appears generally inflamed, tender or reactive.
Depending upon the underlying cause, signs can include:
- widespread redness or pinkness;
- warmth;
- general tenderness or sensitivity to touch;
- itching;
- raised areas or wheals;
- swelling;
- scaling or flaking;
- crusting;
- multiple irritated areas rather than one distinct abrasion;
- irritation corresponding to a larger area of material contact;
- similar skin changes appearing elsewhere on the horse.
The distinction between a focal mechanical lesion and a more diffuse inflammatory reaction can therefore be useful.
It is not, however, diagnostic.
A large area of irritation does not automatically mean "allergy", just as a small sore does not automatically prove poor equipment fit.
The two problems can occur together
This is perhaps the most important point.
Skin sensitivity and mechanical irritation are not mutually exclusive.
Inflamed skin may be less tolerant of normal environmental stresses. Heat, moisture, sweat, mud, dirt and repeated movement can potentially make already compromised skin more vulnerable.
A horse experiencing an underlying dermatological flare may therefore begin reacting to equipment that it has previously worn without difficulty.
Conversely, repeated friction or pressure can damage the normal skin barrier and create inflammation.
There can consequently be a cycle:
skin becomes sensitive → tolerance to contact and friction decreases → irritation develops more easily → inflammation increases → skin becomes still more vulnerable.
This is why identifying a sore area should prompt an assessment of both the horse and the equipment, rather than automatically assuming one particular cause.

Why sensitivity can change with the seasons
Spring — changing coats, insects and increasing environmental exposure
Culicoides-associated insect hypersensitivity commonly begins to become apparent during spring as insect activity increases.
Owners may therefore find that a horse which experienced few skin problems during winter becomes more reactive as spring progresses.
Spring skin check: Pay particular attention when introducing equipment onto areas where the winter coat is being shed. Check for itching, redness, unusual warmth, small raised lesions and changes in behaviour when equipment is fitted.

Summer — insects, sweat, heat and humidity
At the same time, increased temperature and exercise can mean increased sweating.
Moisture sitting between the skin and equipment can alter the local skin environment, while sweat, dust and debris can increase the potential for irritation where equipment remains in contact with the horse.
For this reason, equipment and the skin beneath it should be checked and cleaned regularly.
Summer skin check: Look for itching, rubbing, hives or raised areas, widespread redness and soreness as well as conventional friction marks. Keep equipment clean and allow wet equipment to dry appropriately before reapplication.

Autumn — changing weather and changing skin

Winter — thicker coats, moisture, mud and the stable environment
Long winter coats can also conceal early redness, scurf, crusting or minor wounds.
This makes hands-on examination particularly important.
Rather than relying solely on appearance, run your hands gently over areas underneath boots, bands and other equipment and check for unexpected warmth, swelling, crusting or tenderness.
Winter skin check: Keep the legs and equipment as clean and dry as reasonably possible, inspect beneath long hair and avoid placing equipment over muddy, wet, damaged or inflamed skin.

What does this mean for horses wearing EQU StreamZ Bands?
Can horses be allergic or sensitive to neoprene?
Neoprene sensitivity is possible, but it is important to distinguish an allergic reaction from irritation.
Neoprene, technically known as polychloroprene, is a synthetic rubber valued for its flexibility, durability, insulation and resistance to water and environmental conditions. These properties are precisely why it is so widely used in equestrian equipment, sports supports and protective products.
However, the finished material is more than simply the polychloroprene polymer. Chemicals can be used during rubber manufacture and curing to give the material its required physical properties. Thiourea compounds used in the manufacture of chloroprene rubber are recognised contact sensitisers and have been associated with allergic contact dermatitis.
This does not mean that neoprene is inherently unsafe, nor that every horse—or person—will react to it. Most will not. It means that neoprene should not automatically be described as “hypoallergenic” simply because it is a synthetic material.
There is also an important distinction between allergic contact dermatitis and irritation. An allergic response involves the immune system and sensitisation to a particular substance, whereas irritation can occur without an allergy and may be influenced by factors such as prolonged contact, heat, sweat, moisture, friction and the condition of the skin barrier.
For horses wearing equipment for extended periods, it is therefore important to consider not only what material is touching the skin, but also the environment being created between that material, the coat and the skin.

When underlying health conditions may also affect the skin
Skin condition should also be considered in the context of the horse's wider health. Certain medical conditions can affect the skin directly or indirectly, while swelling, inflammation, infection or impaired tissue health can make the lower limbs particularly vulnerable.
For example, equine lymphangitis involves inflammation of the lymphatic vessels and can produce dramatic swelling, heat, pain and changes to the skin of the affected limb. Other conditions, including PPID, may also be associated with changes affecting the coat, skin health, immune function or susceptibility to infection.
Where a horse has an existing medical condition, recurrent limb swelling, abnormal skin changes or a history of dermatological problems, equipment should be introduced and monitored particularly carefully.

Introducing EQU StreamZ Bands to a sensitive-skinned horse
When introducing the bands, particularly to a horse with a history of sensitive skin, owners should inspect the skin regularly.
Check for:
- redness or discolouration;
- increased warmth;
- swelling;
- itching;
- foot stamping or attempts to remove the bands;
- unusual sensitivity when touching the area;
- rubbed or broken hair;
- moist or damaged skin.
If irritation develops, remove the bands rather than continuing to expose already irritated skin.
Where irritation is significant, persistent, recurrent or unexplained, seek veterinary advice.
Bands should not be fitted over existing open wounds, unexplained swelling or actively inflamed skin without appropriate professional advice.

The special-edition sensitive sleeves are both hypoallergenic and antibacterial. But what does this actually mean?
Hypoallergenic = relates to the likelihood of provoking an allergic response.
Antibacterial = relates to the material's demonstrated activity against bacteria.
What does “hypoallergenic” mean?
The term hypoallergenic does not mean that a material is completely incapable of causing an allergic or irritant reaction. No skin-contact material can be guaranteed to suit every individual horse.
Instead, hypoallergenic is generally used to describe a material that has been designed or selected to reduce the likelihood of provoking an allergic response, for example through careful control of its composition and the exclusion or reduction of substances known to cause sensitisation.
This distinction is important. An allergy is an immune-mediated response to a particular substance, whereas irritation does not necessarily involve an allergy. Heat, moisture, sweat, friction, contamination and prolonged contact can all contribute to irritation even when the material itself is not an allergen.
For this reason, “hypoallergenic” should never be interpreted as “allergy-proof” or as a guarantee that skin irritation cannot occur.
What does “antibacterial” mean?
Antibacterial describes a different material property. It refers to the ability of a material to inhibit bacterial growth or reduce viable bacteria under defined conditions.
Antibacterial properties can be created in different ways. An active component may be incorporated into the fibre or material during manufacture, applied as a treatment to the finished textile, or engineered into the material itself.
Unlike the broad term “hypoallergenic”, antibacterial performance can be measured using recognised laboratory methods. Standards such as ISO 20743 provide quantitative methods for evaluating antibacterial activity in textile products by comparing bacterial behaviour on test materials under controlled conditions.
An antibacterial material should not, however, be confused with a sterile material. Nor does “antibacterial” mean that the material treats bacterial skin infections in a horse. Its purpose is to describe the behaviour of bacteria on or within the material itself, rather than to make a medical claim about the animal wearing it.
For horses with sensitive skin, however, the choice of material sitting directly against the coat and skin can be an important consideration. This is one of the reasons we developed our neoprene-free EQU StreamZ Sensitive Sleeves as an alternative to the standard neoprene sleeve.

Why "neoprene-free" matters more than simply calling a material soft
- the horse's individual dermatological sensitivity;
- breathability and moisture management;
- coat thickness;
- cleanliness;
- environmental contamination;
- duration of contact;
- movement between the material and coat;
- temperature and humidity;
- existing inflammation.
This is why the Sensitive Sleeve should not be presented as a treatment for skin disease.
It is instead a material-management option: removing direct neoprene contact for horses where neoprene sensitivity is known or suspected while retaining the EQU StreamZ technology.
No sleeve or equine material can guarantee that an individual horse will never experience irritation, which is why routine skin inspection remains important regardless of the material being used.
Can a horse suddenly develop skin sensitivity or allergies?
The BHS explicitly states that allergies can develop at any point in a horse's life, usually following repeated or continued exposure. BHS Equine Allergies.
Has the season changed?
Has the horse started growing or shedding its coat?
Has the weather become hotter, wetter or more humid?
Is the horse sweating more?
Has turnout become muddy?
Has insect activity increased?
Is the horse showing itching or sensitivity elsewhere?
Are the bands clean and completely free from trapped dirt, bedding or debris?
Has the horse lost or gained condition, potentially changing the fit?
Is a fastening or edge contacting the skin?
Is the band rotating or moving?
Is there a discrete abrasion, or is a wider area of skin inflamed?
The answers to these questions can provide valuable information.
A useful rule: look at the pattern, not just the redness
More suggestive of focal mechanical irritation
More suggestive that a broader skin reaction should be investigated
A larger or more diffuse area of redness, warmth, swelling, itching, raised skin or tenderness, particularly where the reaction extends across the area of material contact or similar symptoms occur elsewhere.
But remember > Neither pattern provides a diagnosis.
Pressure can injure tissues without immediately producing an open wound, and dermatological disease can sometimes appear localised.
When in doubt, remove the equipment and investigate before reapplying it.
When should I contact my vet?
- an open or deep wound;
- marked swelling;
- significant heat or pain;
- discharge;
- bleeding;
- ulceration;
- extensive crusting;
- rapidly worsening inflammation;
- widespread hives or swelling;
- recurrent unexplained skin reactions;
- signs of infection;
- lameness;
- or any concern about the horse's general health.
A veterinary surgeon can distinguish between conditions that may look similar externally and determine whether further investigation or treatment is required.
In Summary: Skin health should be considered all year round
